Pacific News | Nuclear Legacy Continues to Loom Over the Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands bore the brunt of the United State's nuclear testing with 67 bombs detonated from 1946 to 1958. In the aftermath of these violent tests, radioactive debris was buried on Enewetak Atoll under what is called the Runit Dome. However, as sea levels continue to rise due to the increasing effects of climate change and contaminated marine life is discovered, the integrity of the Dome is being called into question.
